My First Bloggers Conference – Eek!

September 12, 2016

Blog On Conference

Call me foolish or a risk-taker, but I bought a ticket to attend Blog On in Manchester before I’d even registered a domain name!  For anyone that hasn’t heard of this super-friendly event, it’s a bloggers conference full of fantastic speakers, interactive sessions and an opportunity to connect with brands. I’ve read such positive things about Blog On that I just knew I needed to attend early in my blogging life. To be honest, I also knew that having the deadline of the conference would make me get my arse in gear so I didn’t look a complete twonk. And let’s face it, as a newbie blogger I need all the help I can get!

To say I’m nervous about attending would be an understatement. I’m not a fan of large groups. So to voluntarily drop myself in the middle of an event full of successful bloggers, is very intimidating. However, everyone says this is the ideal conference for beginners because it is so friendly and this has absolutely been my experience so far, with lots of fun chat on social media.

Blog On is just two weeks away, so as an introduction for everybody Zoe over at Mama Geek has set us all some ice breaker questions. So here goes with my answers!

1. Share a recent photo of you
Kirsty - Blog On Q&A

2. Describe yourself in five words or less
Mama – independent – organised – friendly – foodie

3. How long have you been blogging and why did you start?
Just over a month! I started to help keep my sanity during this motherhoodery lark. I’m a SAHM, so was looking for a creative outlet that would enable me to claim back an identity and communicate with actual adults.

4. What are you hoping to get out of Blog On?
I’m really looking forward to face-to-face convos with other bloggers and the chance to immerse myself in the fantastic blogging community. Can’t wait to learn lots of useful tips and have a bloomin’ good laugh at the same time.

5. Name a few of your favourite blogs
I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of brilliant blogs, but these are a few that instantly come to mind:

You Baby Me Mummy
Make, Do & Push
Hot Pink Wellingtons
What the Redhead Said
Brummy Mummy of 2

6. What’s your favourite social media platform(s)… and what’s your username?
Surprisingly Twitter and Instagram. I had barely used either before I started blogging, but find them the easiest platforms to engage and build my audience. Find me @Motherhoodery

7. Share a fact about you no-one would guess
I’ve seen a ghost! I was on a marketing job at a dis-used army barracks. A colleague and I were eating our lunch in the car when all of sudden a ‘man’ dressed in camouflage gear crossed the road in front of us. It still gives me goosebumps now because it was very obvious he wasn’t an actual person. He just seemed to float into the hedge. My colleague and I turned to each other and said at the same time, ‘Did you see that?’. The barracks were patrolled by security (black uniform) and we knew no-one else was there. Very spooky…

8. What’s your favourite bit of tech?
Definitely my iPhone. I couldn’t run my life without it!

9. If you won the lottery, how would you spend your winnings?
After paying off all the boring stuff and donating to charity, I’d love to travel around the world in the lap of luxury and buy a holiday home on the coast.

10. If you could host a talk show, who would be your first guest?
I’d love to interview Doris Day because she is one of the few surviving old-time actresses. She has lived through the golden age of movies and experienced going from the very top to barely being seen in public. I’d like to know what she thinks of today’s film industry and some of the behind-the-scenes gossip from classics like Pillow Talk and Calamity Jane.

11. Share a funny memory from your life
When I was a Marketing Manager I used to attend men’s underwear photo-shoots (I know, great job!). On one occasion the model was stood there in his pants and it was obvious he was very ‘blessed’. After attempting to get him to sort himself out, I declared rather too loudly, ‘Can’t you just tuck it under?!’. It took a while for the crew to recover from that one. Such fun days…

12. What is your favourite book and why?
I must admit I love a bit of chick lit, but my childhood favourite is ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark’. I read it countless times and now enjoy reading it to Tutti.

13. What picture is on your phone/tablet lock screen?
This one – Tutti at 10 weeks old.

14. If you had an hour of time all to yourself, how would you spend it?
I’d love to say I’d do something really exciting, but free time is so rare these days, I’d probably just have a hot cup of coffee with a large slice of cake, whilst messing about on t’internet.

15. What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given?
Not advice exactly, but when I was made redundant my friend said, ‘It will be the best decision that has ever been made for you.’ Of course she was completely right because it has given me the freedom to really think about what I want from life. I would never have started blogging if I was still working. It’s easy to stay in your comfort zone, so sometimes you need a nudge to try new things.

I can’t wait for BlogOn, I am nervous but I think I’ll get there mega early so I don’t have to walk in and have everyone stare (or at least that’s what my brain thinks) haha, It does sound the friendliest for newbies x

Hello, thank you so much for your lovely comments ? Yes buying the ticket was one of my fairly rare ‘throwing caution to the wind’ moments! So glad you like the blog name – I deliberated for a few days on whether it was right, but I’m happy with it so far! Look forward to seeing you again soon. x

    Hi Kirsty,

It’s my first Blog on and my 2nd bloggers conference. I think it’s super impressive that you booked the event before going live with your blog. Just shows the faith and determination you had in yourself and your blog – and it looks as though it’s turned out great! 😀

It took me 18 months to attend my first bloggers event, so your steps ahead! – looking forward to meeing you.
